Friday, October 19, 2018
Reception: 5–8pm. Artist’s talk will begin at 6pm.

The Power Plant Gallery is pleased to host Renée Stout for an artist’s talk and reception. Renée is exhibiting as part of Visionary Aponte: Art & Black Freedom, on view at the PPG September 20–November 17, 2018. For a full listing of events visit: aponte.dukefsp.org

Renée grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and received her BFA from Carnegie Mellon University in 1980. In 1985 she moved to Washington, D.C. and began to explore the roots of her African American heritage. She looks to the belief systems of African peoples and their descendants throughout the African Diaspora, as well as to the world and her immediate environment, for the inspiration to create works that encourage self-examination, self-empowerment, and self-healing.

The lives of Stout’s imaginary characters unfold in a variety of media, including painting, mixed media sculpture, photography, and installation. The recipient of awards from the Joan Mitchell Foundation, The Pollock-Krasner Foundation, and the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, Stout has shown her work in solo and group shows throughout the United States, and in England, Russia and the Netherlands.

Visionary Aponte: Art & Black Freedom is a nine-week art exhibit based on a digital humanities project called Digital Aponte. The exhibit and the conversations, screenings, performances, residencies, and workshops that accompany it are organized by the Power Plant Gallery and the Forum for Scholars and Publics. The Power Plant Gallery is an initiative of the Center for Documentary Studies and the MFA in Experimental and Documentary Arts at Duke University. The Forum for Scholars and Publics at Duke is a place where scholars and various publics — local, national, and global — can interact and intersect to generate greater exchange between the university and the broader world.
